League One may not have the glitz of the Premier League, or quality of the Championship but it does provide an incredible football betting landscape. Once you get embroiled in the action of the third tier, you’ll realise what you’ve been missing.
In this guide, we’ll explain everything you need to know to bet on League One.
League One has been around for well over 100 years, but it hasn’t always been named so. The division itself has existed since the EFL began in 1888, but it was labelled League One in the 2004-05 season. Before then, it was called the Football League Second Division. If you go back further, it was called the Football League Third Division.
It is the third tier of the English game, but it’s the first one to include a number in the name. Despite its lower ranking, it’s highly competitive and the quality could be compared to many top divisions in other countries around the world.
Along with acting as the gateway to the holy grail of English football in the Championship and ultimately the Premier League, League One is also a hotbed for emerging talent. Some of the biggest clubs in the country send their promising young players to the league on loan to get vital playing experience. There’s no doubt that this has helped add to the quality on display over the years.
If you’re not sure about what markets to bet on, see below for some of the most popular. Sky Bet offers you the chance to bet on the either the matches themselves, or season long Outrights.
Here, you’ll find our top odds for the overall winner of the league. These change over time, but you may notice that one side starts running away with it in the latter stages of the campaign.
League One Play-Off Odds
The playoff odds for League One are harder to predict. Here, you’ll be staking on who you think will end the season between third and sixth in the league. You can also bet on which teams will make the final and the ultimate winner.
The League One promotion odds cover the teams that are most likely to get promoted to the Championship at the end of the season. This can be via automatic promotion or the playoffs.
In the League One relegation odds, you’ll find prices on the teams most likely to face the drop. Remember that four teams go down from this tier, so there’s a fierce fight for survival.
League One Top 7 Finish Odds
There’s also a heated scrap for the playoff positions in League One. With so much to play for, no one can afford to take their foot off the gas. That’s why there’s always a lot of betting activity around the top seven finish.
The League One campaign is a straight scrap for the top two places – both of which mean instant tickets up into the Championship. The third to sixth-place sides battle it out in the playoffs for the final entry to the second tier of English football.
What makes League One different from the tiers above it is that a whopping four teams get relegated to League Two. That’s the bottom four positions, 21st to 24th. With excitement at both ends of the table, you don’t want to miss out on League One action.
There are 24 teams in the third division of the English football pyramid. I you want to see who’s in there currently you can check the latest version of the league table.
How the Sky Bet League One Play-Offs work
The same format applies one tier down, teams finishing third to sixth compete over two-legged semi-finals and a Wembley final for the last promotion place into the Championship.
Stockport County, Bradford City, Bolton and Stevenage are the four qualifiers for 2025-26. Bolton were already confirmed in the play-offs before the final day, while Bradford’s 2-1 win over Exeter City also relegated their opponents.
The League One semi-finals take place on 9, 13 and 14 May, with the final at Wembley on 24 May.
What promotion is worth
Clubs in League One receive around £2m in combined EFL and Premier League solidarity payments, but promotion to the Championship unlocks roughly £11m in total central distributions, a fivefold revenue increase before higher attendances and commercial income are factored in.
Recent history
Charlton Athletic won the 2025 League One play-off final, beating Leyton Orient 1-0 at Wembley to return to the Championship.
